Creator’s Journal: When the Earth Begins to Dance – Village (Kampong) Fantasy

The inspiration for Village (Kampong) Fantasy came from a quiet morning walk through a fishing village—one of those moments that feels ordinary at first, yet lingers deeply in the heart.

As we strolled along the village path, time seemed to slow. The sky had just awakened, washed in soft hues of blue and gold. The sea, calm and rhythmic, felt as though it was gently singing its morning song, while the earth beneath our feet carried a quiet energy—alive, warm, and ready for the day. In that moment, there was no urgency, no noise, only a sense of peace and simple joy that is increasingly rare in modern life.

The kampong has always represented more than just a place to us. It is a symbol of harmony—between people and nature, between labour and rest, between tradition and everyday living. Fishermen preparing their nets, wooden houses breathing with the sea breeze, and the unspoken rhythm of village life all come together in a natural choreography. It is as if the land itself is dancing, welcoming the sun and celebrating another day of existence.

Through this theme, we wanted to capture that gentle fantasy—not an escape from reality, but a return to something familiar and grounding. Each brushstroke reflects the warmth of the morning light, the movement of the sea, and the quiet optimism that fills the air at dawn. The patterns and colours are intentionally fluid, echoing the natural flow of village life where everything moves in balance, without force.

Village (Kampong) Fantasy is a reminder of where we come from and what truly nourishes us. It speaks of simplicity, resilience, and the beauty found in everyday moments. By translating this experience onto ceramic, we hope to preserve the spirit of the kampong—allowing it to live on not only as a memory, but as an artwork that can be touched, used, and shared.

In a fast-changing world, this piece is our way of holding on to a morning by the sea—where the sky is bright, the sea is singing, and the earth dances gently into a new day.
